Legal system
Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1924, and became independent in December 1991; a new constitution came into effect in May 1992
National legislature
Under constitutional amendments from September 2020, the parliament, to be known as the Milli Genesh, will become bicameral in March 2021, with the creation of a 56-member upper house (Halk Maslahaty). The existing 125-member Mejlis, whose deputies are elected in single-mandate constituencies, will remain as the lower house

Main political parties
In December 1991 the Turkmen Communist Party changed its name to the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, which has become the party of power. A new political party, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (UIE), was formed in August 2012 and represents the interests of business owners. The Agrarian Party held its initial congress in September 2014; it represents the interests of rural areas and agriculture. The entrance of new political parties to the political system is controlled by Mr Berdymukhamedov. All genuine opposition parties are banned
