- Our deal with Russia to destroy Syrian chemical weapons (CW) is a huge win for the United States because it will help keep those arms out of the hands of terrorists. Nevertheless, skeptics claim: We can't trust the Russians or the Syrians—despite America's history of reaching arms reduction deals with the Soviets and the Russians; We can't eliminate CW during a civil war—despite our experience with CW destruction; We will pay too much to implement this plan—even though it is far less than what we would spend on strikes. So far, the skeptics are wrong. While the destruction of Syria's CW will be a challenge, it is one that we can and should meet.

- L'article explore la relation entre militantisme et répression à partir du cas du Parti National Bolchevique (NBP) russe. Partant de la thèse selon laquelle l'effet globalement décourageant de la répression sur la masse des militants est contrebalancé par la radicalisation d'une minorité d'entre eux, il montre que cet effet incitatif peut être décomposé en deux mécanismes distincts. Des travaux antérieurs ont ainsi montré que la répression peut avoir un rendement extérieur en termes d'image, de notoriété ou de stratégie d'alliances ; mais elle peut également avoir un rendement intérieur considérable, en alimentant l'engagement. Nourrissant une représentation héroïque de soi chez les militants, la répression est au principe d'une rétribution spécifique du militantisme - que l'on qualifie d'escapiste - fondée sur le plaisir retiré de la mise en jeu de scénarios d'action romantique, exaltante et anti-routinière.

- Cet article analyse les effets des processus de radicalisation sur le militantisme des membres du PC chilien à partir de la fin des années 1980. Nous montrons que l'adoption d'une stratégie insurrectionnelle sous le régime autoritaire a donné lieu à l'affaiblissement de l'emprise partisane sur le corps militant et à la formation d'une nouvelle génération militante au sommet de la mobilisation antidictatoriale (1983-1986). Prenant la forme d'une crise des vocations militantes, la déradicalisation entamée avec la transition démocratique (1988-1989) oblige les membres de cette génération à une reconstruction douloureuse de leur attachement partisan. L'étude des trajectoires individuelles montre ainsi comment ces militants formés à la violence révolutionnaire sont amenés à normaliser leurs pratiques dans la nouvelle démocratie, leur déradicalisation laissant paradoxalement libre cours à certaines radicalités militantes sur fond de transformation de l'organisation partisane comme composante de l'opposition aux nouvelles autorités démocratiques.

- Cette étude examine les trajectoires de vie des militants de la nouvelle gauche aux États-Unis et au Japon à la fin des années 1960, qui ont investi l'action armée, sont entrés en clandestinité ou ont connu l'exil au sommet du cycle de protestation. Basée sur des données collectées pendant plusieurs années auprès de plus de 100 militants engagés dans 12 organisations armées clandestines, l'analyse est centrée sur la relation conflictuelle de ces militants avec les agents étatiques du contrôle social. L'étude identifie les principales tendances de l'interaction de ces militants avec d'autres acteurs du mouvement protestataire qui ont rendu possible leur entrée et leur maintien en clandestinité, facilitant ultérieurement leur désengagement de la violence, en se concentrant particulièrement sur le rôle du réseau de soutien juridique (RSJ).

- Le but de cet article est d'analyser la façon dont l'État Nouveau portugais (Estado Novo, 1933-1974) a transformé les institutions politiques héritées de la république parlementaire et a fondé de nouveaux organismes destinés au contrôle et à la punition de la dissidence politique. Pour décrire ce processus de « transition autoritaire », on analyse en premier lieu la création de lois et d'institutions répressives afin d'introduire une problématisation de ses effets contradictoires sur le militantisme. Si la description de la législation et des institutions d'ordre publique est d'ordre général, les effets sont analysés plus précisément dans le cas de la répression et du contrôle de l'activisme estudiantin et de la gauche marxiste (parti communiste et gauche radicale). On analyse enfin les effets sur les trajectoires des militants, de la chute du régime au début de la transition démocratique.

- Né à Chicago en 1932, Melvin Van Peebles est l'un des artisans du cinéma noir indépendant. Tout à la fois scénariste, acteur, réalisateur et monteur de ses films dont il composait aussi les musiques, ce créateur protéiforme a consacré son existence à documenter les cultures et les conflits qui animent les Africain-Américains des quartiers pauvres. Les « siens », comme il dit, apparaissent ainsi comme l'indéfectible motif de ses engagements. Ils sont ceux qui permettent de rassembler les faisceaux d'une vie multiple, mais toujours orientée par une même visée politique : celle des résistances africaines-américaines face aux dispositifs de la domination blanche. Bien plus qu'un appel à un simple retournement du stigmate sur fond de racisme inversé, les créations de Melvin Van Peebles apparaissent dès lors comme autant de regards portés sur une Amérique noire dont les acteurs n'entendent plus se contenter des seconds rôles.
